Labour for a diagnosed fault — element, thermostat, valve — excluding parts.
What does geyser repair or installation cost?
Start with a realistic range, then understand which parts of your property and job move the final number.
For planning, a standard geyser repair (element, thermostat or valve) often costs R800–R2,500 in labour, excluding parts. A full 150L electric geyser replacement, unit plus standard installation, typically totals R6,500–R15,000. These are guidance ranges, not guaranteed prices — geyser size, access, and how much of the existing plumbing/electrical needs to be brought up to standard determine the site-specific quote.
Three useful levels of cost
Prices should always be confirmed in writing after the plumber understands the site. VAT inclusion, travel and optional extras must be clear on the quote.
These ranges are indicative planning figures based on general South African market rates — not pulled from a live quote panel. Compliance requirements (PIRB, SANS 10254, SANS 10087) below are regulatory fact; prices are a starting estimate only.
A broad residential planning range. Geyser brand, size, warranty, and how much of the surrounding plumbing/electrical is included account for much of the spread.
Gas connections need their own SAQCC Gas-registered installer and SANS 10087 compliance path, separate from the electrical requirements below. Roof-space access, multiple units, or bringing older plumbing up to SANS 10254 standard also need a designed scope rather than a one-line estimate.
The biggest price movers
A cheap quote can become expensive when the original scope hides parts the job actually needs.
- Geyser size. A 100L unit costs meaningfully less than a 200L+ unit, in both the unit itself and labour.
- Access. Roof-space installs generally cost more than a cupboard or garage-mounted geyser.
- Compliance retrofits. An older installation missing a drip tray, pressure/vacuum valve, or isolating valve needs those added to meet SANS 10254 — a real cost, not an upsell.
- Electrical work. If the existing wiring or isolator doesn't meet current standard, a registered electrician's work (and the CoC) adds to the total.
- Emergency timing. Same-day or after-hours callouts for a burst geyser commonly carry a premium over a scheduled booking.
- Old geyser removal. Confirm whether disposal of the old unit is included or billed separately.
