Does a plumber or electrician fix a geyser?

Usually a plumber handles the actual repair or installation — the tank, pipes, valves, and internal electrical parts like the heating element and thermostat. But the Electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for the connection itself is issued by a registered electrician, not the plumber — many installers work as a pair, or hold both qualifications, so confirm upfront whether the CoC is included in the job. An electrician gets involved directly when the fault is upstream of the geyser itself — a tripped breaker pointing to a wiring fault elsewhere on the board, or a problem with a dedicated wall switch or timer.

How much do plumbers charge to install a geyser?

For planning, a standard callout/repair (element, thermostat, valve) often falls around R800–R2,500 in labour, excluding parts. A full 150L electric geyser replacement — unit plus standard installation — typically totals R6,500–R15,000. Geyser size, access, and how much of the existing plumbing/electrical needs to be brought up to SANS 10254 standard move the final number, so use a written site-specific quote rather than treating any range as a guarantee.

How long does a geyser installation take?

A straightforward like-for-like replacement is commonly done in three to six hours. Ceiling-space access, an unusual mounting position, or bringing older plumbing/electrical work up to current standard (drip tray, pressure/vacuum valve, isolating valve) can extend the job — the plumber should explain what's included before starting.

What is required to install a geyser correctly?

A correct installation under SANS 10254 needs a drip tray under the geyser, a pressure relief valve, a vacuum breaker, an isolating valve, and (for electric geysers) a compliant electrical connection signed off with a Certificate of Compliance. Skipping these isn't just a compliance technicality — it's a common reason insurers and geyser manufacturers cite when refusing a claim later.

Does a geyser need a drip tray?

Yes — a drip tray (with its own drain, routed away from the building) is a SANS 10254 requirement for a compliant geyser installation, not an optional extra. It catches condensation and any small leaks before they cause ceiling or wall damage. An installer skipping this on an older installation is a common reason a CoC can't be issued until it's retrofitted.

How much is it to repair a geyser?

A diagnosed fault — element, thermostat, or a valve — typically costs R800–R2,500 in labour, excluding parts, for a standard callout. Emergency or after-hours callouts for a burst geyser often carry a premium over a scheduled booking. If the tank itself has failed (rusted through, split, burst), that's a replacement, not a repair — no amount of labour patches a failed tank.

How many years should a geyser last?

Most SA geysers last roughly 8–15 years, depending on water quality (hard water shortens lifespan), maintenance, and installation quality. An older unit developing a fault is often more cost-effective to replace than to keep repairing — ask your plumber for an honest read on which side of that line your geyser sits.

What is the most common cause of no hot water?

Most often a failed heating element or a tripped thermostat — both repairable without replacing the whole unit. Other common causes: a tripped circuit breaker (an electrical fault, not the geyser itself), a faulty timer if one is fitted, or — if the geyser is old — a failing tank that's starting to lose heat retention before it eventually leaks.

Can I replace a geyser element myself?

Not safely or legally for a proper repair. A geyser element sits behind both plumbing and electrical connections, and any electrical work on a geyser circuit needs to be signed off by a registered electrician with a Certificate of Compliance — a DIY element swap without that paperwork can void your insurance and your geyser's warranty even if the repair itself works.

How do you know if a geyser is about to burst?

Warning signs include rust-coloured water, a banging or popping noise from the tank (often mineral buildup on the element), visible rust or damp around the geyser or drip tray, and a geyser that's well past 8–10 years old with no recent inspection. If you see active dripping from the tank body itself (not a valve), treat it as urgent — a slow leak from the tank is usually a sign the tank has already started to fail.

Is it better to leave a geyser on all the time, or switch it off?

For most households, leaving it on (ideally with the thermostat set around 55-60°C, not higher) is more practical than switching it off and on, since a geyser is well-insulated and the energy cost of reheating from cold each time often outweighs standby losses. Leaving an electric geyser running unattended for very long periods (24+ hours with nobody home) isn't itself dangerous on a compliant installation with a working pressure/vacuum valve, but it's worth having those safety components checked if you're unsure when they were last inspected.

Is a small geyser enough for a household, or do I need a bigger one?

Sizing depends on household size and usage pattern, not just headcount — a 150L geyser is a common default for a small family, but back-to-back showers, a bath, or multiple bathrooms can outstrip a smaller unit quickly. A plumber can size this properly based on your actual fixtures and usage rather than a generic rule of thumb.

What damages a geyser element?

The most common cause is scale/mineral buildup (especially in hard-water areas), which insulates the element and makes it work harder until it burns out. Running a geyser dry (empty of water) even briefly can also destroy an element almost immediately. Regular servicing and, in hard-water areas, an anode or water-softening approach can meaningfully extend element life.
